"Creative use of multimedia"
For a Santa Fe New Mexican report card grading the city's parks, I gathered data on dozens of parks, shot photos and wrote stories on park issues. Our use of 360 photos, Tableau maps and audience input won the first place creative use of multimedia award from the Inland Press Association.
Crowdsourced Breaking News
When the power went out during a winter ice storm in Eugene, Oregon a web developer and I gathered intel from University of Oregon students via Google Docs (which they could access via cell connection, even if internet was out). Then, we built a map to illustrate the problem.
Digitally Immersive Stories
As editor of The Emerald, I built a team to code digitally immersive story platforms to showcase our best stories in the best way possible. This story, about concussions and other injuries that plague hockey, got an honorable mention in an Associated Collegiate Press competition.
Tableau map-making
As a digital producer at The Santa Fe New Mexican I've been working to hone my map-making skills on Tableau. The map above shows the capture and release locations of bears relocated in New Mexico, many of which are taken to Rio Arriba County. Click the image for more maps.
Solutions Journalism for Mobile
I edited the first Solutions Journalism edition of OR Magazine, an iPad publication produced by the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication. We were one of five digital publications given a Crown Award by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
News Game Development
At News21, a colleague and I thought it would be beneficial to create a news game to teach readers how voters get turned away at the polls. We pitched the idea and worked with the Innovation Lab at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism to create this game.
